Description
The enclosure and outbuildings to the farmyard at Hodsock Grange date from the late 18th century. Constructed of dressed coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, they form a quadrangle-plan arrangement. The west side, consisting of nine bays, is set on a plinth. A central archway is distinguished by ashlar quoins, a feature voussoir arch, a projecting keystone, and imposts extending to an impost band, topped with a moulded cornice. Flanking this arch are single walls, each with three recessed arched panels containing stone archivolts, various openings, and terminating in slightly projecting outbuildings with pyramidal pantile roofs. These outbuildings also feature similar arched panels. The left outbuilding has a doorway with a wooden door set within a flush ashlar surround and keystone. Above the door is a slatted wooden opening with glazing bar overlight, also in a flush ashlar surround. The right outbuilding has a single glazing bar casement, with a fixed glazing bar light above it, both within flush ashlar surrounds. The north side is dominated by a two-story barn with a hipped pantile roof. A slightly projecting central bay contains a two-story archway, incorporating a stone archivolt, keystone, and impost bands. To the right of this is a doorway, and above it, two further doorways with wooden doors, all within flush ashlar surrounds. There are two cross ventilators on the ground floor and four above. A single-story wall, with an ashlar coping, runs to the right, leading to a two-story, slightly projecting outbuilding with a pyramidal pantile roof. This has a two-story arched recessed panel with a stone archivolt and impost band, a single fixed light, a blocked opening, and a doorway, all set within flush ashlar surrounds. To the left of the barn, another single-story wall with ashlar coping and a doorway leads to a similar outbuilding featuring blocked openings. A further single-story outbuilding with a hipped pantile roof and ashlar quoins completes the left side. The east side retains a central arch similar to the west side, although it has undergone alterations and additions. The southern side of the quadrangle connects to the main house.
