Description
The Castle Garden and Kitchen Gardens at Wallingwells Hall are mid-18th century structures featuring a garden wall with four projecting pavilions at the corners. The wall is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and is arranged in a quadrangle plan, situated at the head of a quarry. The north, east, and west sides are defined by an embattled coursed rubble wall.
At the northeast and northwest corners, there are single-storey pavilions, each with a pointed arched entrance in their north walls. The southeast corner features a three-storey embattled pavilion, where the first floor opens into the garden through a central pointed archway, flanked by two taller, narrower arches. The south wall of this pavilion contains a single pointed arched window opening. The ground floor, which faces the quarry, includes a single archway and a rectangular opening. Inside, the first floor retains the remains of a fireplace.
The southwest corner has another two-storey embattled pavilion. The ground floor on the east side opens into the garden, showcasing a central, possibly reused, moulded ashlar arch supported by slim, worn engaged columns and capitals. Additionally, there is a wall to the northwest with an arched opening featuring ashlar impost blocks and a keystone. The southeast area includes three walled kitchen gardens with various openings.
