Description
Carlton Mill is a museum that was originally a water corn mill, built in the late 18th century and expanded in the mid 19th century. The structure features coursed rubble and dressed course rubble with pantile roofs. The two 19th-century gabled bays project from the 18th-century wing and have decorative bargeboards with pendants. The 19th-century addition is two storeys plus an attic and consists of two bays. The left bay has an archway with a keystone, now containing a recessed 20th-century glazed door and a 20th-century casement window to its left. The right bay features a 20th-century casement window. Above these are two 20th-century casements under segmental arches, with two similar casements and arches above.
To the right, set back, is a single bay of the mid-18th-century coursed rubble wing, which is two and a half storeys high with a hipped pantile roof, ashlar quoins, and a large stone stack to the right. This bay has a single arch with a keystone, reinforced with red brick, and houses a 19th-century cast iron water wheel that is still in place. Above this arch is a single Yorkshire sash window under a segmental arch, with another Yorkshire sash on the top floor. In front of the mill, there are three mill stones. The interior retains the 19th-century grinding machinery, including a pit wheel, spur wheel, and stone nuts with wooden teeth for driving the three stones, as well as a chute.
