Description

Felley Priory, now a house, was originally an Augustinian Priory established in 1156. It underwent significant remodelling in the mid-16th century, with alterations in the early 17th century and extensive additions in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with brick, and has ashlar dressings. Coped gables with kneelers are present, along with several stacks – two side wall, two gable, and three external.

The west front features a single-storey wing raised and extended in the late 19th century, with a casement flanked by cross eaves dormers. Further to the right are two casements, followed by two smaller ones. A recessed entrance bay has a moulded Tudor arched door from the 16th century, with a hood mould, flanked by small casements. A stepped gabled stack from the 16th century is located to the right, featuring kneelers and terracotta plaques of a lion and rose. A rendered upper stage and a panelled octagonal stalk were rebuilt in approximately 1975. The front also includes a casement and remains of two moulded buttresses.

The east front has late 19th-century additions at each end. A two-storey canted bay window with a conical roof and three cross casements is on the left, while a half-glazed door is flanked by a single casement to the left and five mullioned casements to the right. A later addition has a shouldered opening and two casements, above which is a bay window with seven casements. Further to the right are nine casements, another chimney with a terracotta plaque, and two gabled dormers. A central gabled porch tower with two casements is located on the return angle to the north, alongside a keystoned round-headed doorway. Each floor of the tower has a casement.

On the south side, a late 20th-century lean-to conservatory is situated to the left. A stair turret with a coped gable and a small square window is above a buttress to the left in the same section. The garden wall adjoining the north east end incorporates three re-sited round responds from the 13th century, one with a waterleaf capital. The south side of the wall features a re-set chamfered piscina and niche, while the north side has a blocked doorway.

The interior is reported to contain a fireplace with a lintel made from an 11th-century inscribed slab, and 20th-century stairs incorporating 17th-century components. Felley Priory was founded in 1156 and converted to secular use in the 16th century, being owned by the Middleton family from 1604.
