Description
The gateway at Kettlethorpe Hall, along with its mounting block, garden wall, and gate piers, dates back to the 14th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century. The structure is made of ashlar and red brick. The central gateway features an ashlar facade, with brick side walls and is flanked by single stepped buttresses that have sloping tops. The central pointed double chamfered archway is topped with castellations, and there are gargoyles on either side, which have likely been repositioned. Only the springers of the rear brick gate arch remain. A blocked 14th-century pointed-headed doorway is visible in the right-hand wall, indicating that despite significant restoration, the structure retains its medieval origins. To the left of the gate arch, there is a mounting block accessed by three steps. On either side, brick walls with shaped brick copings lead to gateways that feature rusticated brick piers topped with stone balls, one of which displays the letters 'CH' along with a heraldic crest.
