Description
The gateway, entrance lodges, and wall to Fillingham Castle were built around 1775 in a neo-Gothic style, possibly by John Carr. Constructed from limestone ashlar and wrought iron, the gateway features a large pointed carriage archway with a hood mould, label stops, and impost mouldings that extend as moulded cornices over the tall flanking projections and attached lodges. The ornate wrought iron gates complement the design. Above the archway, a moulded cornice runs along with battlements. The tall projections on either side of the archway are divided into three sections by two moulded cornices. The lowest section on each side is decorated with a single circular panel with a hood mould, the central section features raised moulded crosses, and the upper section has simple plaques. Each projection is topped with battlements. The lodges are set diagonally to the arch, each featuring a single glazing bar sash window with a trefoiled head facing the arch. On the outer faces, each lodge has a single opening with a trefoiled head that is blocked with a painted board. Low battlemented turrets are attached to the outer ends of the lodges, aligned with the central gateway, and each is divided by a moulded cornice with a raised circular panel and a hood mould below, along with a raised moulded cross above. The screen walls extend approximately 40 yards in each direction, featuring coping and crenellations of varying heights. The interiors of the lodges are not of interest.
