Description
There are four chest tombs located 5 to 20 meters south of the south porch at the Church of St Mary and St Peter. These tombs date from the early to mid-19th century and are made of ashlar stone. The northernmost tomb, which is closest to the church, features a moulded plinth, a hipped top, and oval panels at the ends. It is dated 1816, but the inscription is illegible. The next tomb to the south has a moulded plinth, corner pilasters, a flat top, and slate slabs. This tomb was made by Green of Denton for Joseph Stubbs and Ann Stubbs, dated 1820 and 1829. The third tomb has a plinth, corner buttresses, a hipped top, and slate slabs with chamfered corners. It was created by R Brewin of Grantham for John Nicholls in 1832 and by Green of Denton for Jane Nicholls in 1851. The southernmost tomb features a plinth, panelled sides, and a flat top. The only legible inscription on this tomb is for Anthony Marriott, dated 1812.
