Description
The Lilacs and The Old Post Office are two houses located on Church Street in Harlaxston, dating from around 1770 and remodelled in 1790, with additional changes made in the mid to late 19th century and the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed squared stone with a brick front, featuring ashlar dressings and a pantile roof. They have a single gable and two ridge brick stacks, along with dentillated eaves. The structure is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The windows are framed with ashlar surrounds, with those on the ground floor having cornices. On the left side, there are two 20th-century glazing bar casements on each floor. On the right side, there are two slightly larger 2-light casements with cast-iron lattice glazing bars and chamfered stone mullions. There is also a single bay brick addition on the right, which includes a 19th-century three-light segment-headed window on the right return. This building is likely one of those constructed or altered around 1790 to 1820 by George de Ligne Gregory, who was the Lord of the Manor of Harlaxton.
