Description

The Old School House is a mid-19th century building that was originally a school and school house, now converted into a private residence. It likely incorporates parts of an earlier structure and has undergone some alterations in the late 20th century. The ground floor features red brick and coursed squared stone, with a decorative appearance of timber framing and rendered nogging above. The roof is a combination of pantiles and slate, topped with a brick ridge stack that has a carved brick coped flue, along with several other stacks that have coped terracotta flues.

The building is designed in the Tudor Revival style and consists of two storeys with five bays, arranged in an L-plan. Most of the windows are modern casements with glazing bars. On the left side, there is an open timber-framed gallery with a splat balustrade, beneath which is a two-light casement window and a wooden-cased lead water pump. To the left, a square external stack with a stone base and ashlar flue is present, while to the right, there is another square external brick stack, flanked by two casements, the larger one on the left. Below this stack are small single windows with diamond pane glazing, followed by more modern two-light casements. Further along, there is a plank door with ornamental hinges on the left and another diamond-paned window on the right.

The left gable features a modern casement window and is topped with a gabled square wooden bellcote. At the rear, there is a square external brick stack with double flues, and the rear wing has a smaller side wall stack. This building was remodelled between 1820 and 1840 by Gregory Gregory, the Lord of the Manor of Harlaxton, following the design principles of J.C. Loudon.
