Description

Woodbine Cottage, along with its attached wall and steps, is an estate cottage, now a house, dating from the mid-18th century. It was altered in 1789 and remodelled around 1820-1840. The construction consists of coursed squared stone with a red brick front and ashlar dressings, topped with a pantile roof. The property features two gable stacks – one external with supporting ashlar buttresses – which have brick bases and square ashlar coped double flues. Other features include an ashlar plinth, dentillated brick eaves, and coped gables. The cottage is two storeys high with a two-window range. The windows have stone surrounds, chamfered mullions, and cornices and are fitted with diamond pane glazing. A central 4-centred arched ashlar doorcase contains a plank door with ornamental hinges, linked on the left to a four-light window under a common cornice. Three ashlar steps lead to the front door. To the right is a two-light window with a blank shield above. A short ashlar wall with a gateway and steps stands at the right end. The cottage is one of a group built or altered around 1790-1820 by George de Ligne Gregory and remodelled in a picturesque style around 1820-1840 by Gregory Gregory.
