Description
Tudor Cottages, also known as Trollope Bedehouses, are two cottages located at 34 and 34A South Street. They date back to the 17th century and are constructed of red brick with a stone-capped gable end, a plinth, and rusticated quoins. The cottages feature a coved eaves cornice and an old slate roof with four hipped dormers. There are six windows with modern leaded lights and wood mullions styled in the 17th-century manner. A central door is set beneath a four-centred stone arch. Although a plaque indicates the date 1636, the building has undergone significant modernization. Excavations in 1933 revealed the foundations of a large house on this and the adjoining site, which may have been occupied by Sir John Thimbleby, a leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536. The cottages are part of a group that includes Nos 31 to 35 (odd), Nos 32, 34, 34A, 36, the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, and the Old Grammar School.
