Description
The Old Grammar School, located in the churchyard on South Street, is a single-storey building dating from 1678. It is constructed of red and vitrified brick, featuring a moulded stone plinth and a moulded stone cornice. The west side has two buttresses and a tall brick chimney, while the gable ends are adorned with stone pinnacles. The roof is covered with old slates.
On the south elevation, there is a repaired 6-light mullioned window with two transoms, and a stone cornice that runs across the entire building, although it is damaged at one end. The side elevations have two 19th-century windows with segmental arches made from red and black brick. The entrance is located in the centre of the west side, featuring a moulded stone rectangular surround and a moulded four-centred arch, though this is currently obscured by a modern porch.
The Old Grammar School is part of a group that includes Nos 31 to 35 (odd), Nos 32, 34, 34A, 36, and the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul.
