Description
No. 5 Red Lion Square, dating to the early 19th century, was originally constructed as a warehouse. It is of group value with Nos. 7 to 10. The building is built of coarse rubble with stone dressings, and yellow and white bricks to the side. It has three storeys and a distinctive, moulded flattened Dutch gable facing the road, topped with a ball finial. Rusticated quoins mark the corners. A moulded cornice follows the line of the gable. The top storey features fixed windows with glazing bars, set within a round-arched head with a keystone and rustication. A horizontal band separates the first and second floors. The first floor has three windows with segmental stone arches, rusticated reveals, and glazing bars. Another moulded band sits above the ground floor, where two shop windows are located, each with a segmental arch, bolection-moulded reveals, rustication, and a keystone. A double, half-glazed door is centrally positioned, featuring a cornice and keystone.
