Description
St Peter's Callis Almshouses, rebuilt in 1863 in a Gothic style, are located on All Saints' Street. The foundation is reputed to be from 15th century merchants of the Staple of Calais, which is how the building got its name. The almshouses provide accommodation for three spinsters and are a single storey constructed of ashlar stone. The roof is covered with stone slates and features two tall ashlar chimney stacks.
On the left side, there is a tall gable with a finial and a recess that contains a blank shield. Above this, a four-light mullion window is set above six recessed panels. The entrance door is situated within a four-centred archway that has carved spandrels, topped by a moulded small Dutch gable, which displays the name of the almshouses and the date on a label. To the right of the entrance, there is a two-light window. The building stands on a stone plinth.
