Description
The Baroque terrace, fountain, and statues located 25 metres south-east of Harlaxton Manor were constructed between 1838 and 1844 by William Burn for Gregory Gregory. The statues of reclining lions, dating from the 18th century, were sourced from Clumber Park. The structure is designed in the Baroque Revival style and is built of ashlar stone.
The terrace features a retaining wall with a prominent central section, flanked by curving stairs leading to raised flower beds. The central piece consists of three bays with rusticated corner pilasters and a cornice above, supporting a shaped balustrade on the side bays, which have panelled pedestals. The central bay includes a plain lintel resting on half-figure corbels, while the side bays and returns feature rusticated round arches. The central opening contains a round arched altar with a grotto behind it, showcasing a shell.
In front of the central piece, there is an octagonal basin with a shallow bowl fountain. Steps on three sides of the platform are flanked at the front by rectangular pedestals that hold marble lion statues. The retaining wall on either side of the central piece has panels defined by pilasters and a ramped shaped coping. Each end features an L-plan staircase with an intermediate landing and a scrolled balustrade wall. At the base of the stairs, there is a square raised bed with a plinth, coping, and double angle pilasters, along with an urn on a square corniced pedestal on the outer side.
Behind the raised beds, L-plan stairs with intermediate landings and shaped balustrade walls lead to the upper level of the terrace, which is enclosed by low walls with plain coping and square pedestals. The central opening is flanked by curved walls that include stone seats, and opposite this opening, a pair of steps leads to a rectangular corniced pedestal. This terrace is part of the Harlaxton Manor Gardens, which are registered as grade II*.
