Description

The Old Black Bull is a former coaching inn, now a house, built around 1731 with late 18th century alterations and an extension added around 1800. The building is constructed of red brick with ashlar quoins and dressings, and has coursed limestone rubble at the rear, also featuring ashlar dressings. It has mansard slate roofs with raised stone coped gables, a single gable, and two ridge red brick stacks. The layout consists of parallel ranges, and the building is two storeys high with attics, presenting a six-bay front. Notable architectural features include a first-floor band, rusticated quoins, and a moulded eaves course.

The entrance has an off-centre panelled door with a Gothick overlight set in a moulded stone architrave, which is adorned with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, flanked by pairs of windows. To the right of the entrance is another panelled door with a plain overlight. The first floor features five windows, with a single glazing bar sash to the right that has an ashlar lintel with a keyblock. The remaining windows are plain sashes with serpentine lintels and incised keyblocks. An ashlar sundial is located between the second and third windows. The roof includes five flat dormers with plain sashes and leaded cheeks.

The rear range, added around 1800, is made of stone. Inside, the central room features dado panelling and a corner cupboard with a semi-circular headed double door and fluted key. The room to the left has an Adam style fireplace with an early 18th century eared stone surround. A dogleg staircase is present, featuring two turned and knopped balusters per tread and a carved string. Notably, the boxer Cribb stayed here the night before his last bare-fisted fight in this country against Molyneaux at the Thistleton Gap.
