Description

Priory House is a small country house with elements dating back to around 1730, with significant alterations in 1798 and the 19th and 20th centuries. The front facade is constructed of blue lias, red brick, brown brick, some rendering, and 20th-century ashlar patching, topped with a low hipped slate roof. The three-bay front has a central doorway featuring a plain rectangular overlight and a six-panelled door, flanked by narrow rectangular windows. Large semicircular bays on either side of the doorway contain three long-glazed sash windows. A rainwater head inscribed "1798" is attached to the west bay. The first floor has three windows with glazing bar sashes, set within rectangular recesses with splayed brick lintels extending the width of each recess. Above are three smaller glazing bar sashes, finished with a 20th-century brown brick parapet. Modern red brick bathroom blocks and conservatories are attached to the return walls. The rear range of the house dates back to around 1730, to which the later front has been added. Inside, one room retains features from around 1730, including niches and fluted pilasters. The staircase is of a more elegant design, dating to 1798.
