Description
15 and 17 Church Street comprise two former cottages, originally a rectory. The building dates to 1619, with an extension in 1697, and has been remodelled in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a Collyweston slate roof with raised stone coped gables and ball finials. There is one axial stone stack with a cornice, and a single wall stack. The building is in an L-shape.
The front is single-storey with attics, and has four bays, with the right-hand bay projected and gabled. An off-centre planked door is covered by a wooden pent roofed hood, flanked by single three-light glazing bar windows. A further similar window is to the right, and a single two-light window is above at first floor level. All windows are 19th century, with chamfered ashlar lintels and cornices. Dormers have two-light glazing bar casements and rendered cheeks. An ashlar datestone inscribed "1619" is in the right-hand gable, and a stone inscribed "1697 William Stilton" is in the main range. The building was described as the Rectory in a glebe terrier from 1708, and William Stilton was vicar and master at the Grammar School at that time.
