Description

This is a range of three buildings on High Street, dating to around 1671 and representing an early 18th-century style similar to the adjacent building at number 14. They are constructed of ashlar and have stone slate roofs. Number 16 has a single cambered dormer window, while number 17 has two. A well-crafted detail is the modillion eaves cornice. The buildings have a regular fenestration pattern of 3, 2, and 4 windows respectively, with bolection-moulded window surrounds that continue upwards as bands. All windows are hung sashes. A particularly noteworthy feature of number 17 is the central first-floor sash window, which is three lights wide and features a small pilaster strip, dentil frieze, moulded cornice, and small pediment. There are blind bolection moulded panels flanking this window. The buildings are part of a group, forming a visual unity with numbers 13 and 14, and with the Public Library.
