Description
Caythorpe Hall is a country house built in 1823 by William Parsons for Colonel G. Hussey Packe. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with lead dressings and a balanced pair of moulded stone ridge stacks. The principal east front has two storeys, a first floor band, a heavily moulded cornice, and a plain parapet. It consists of five bays, with the central bay recessed. A tetrastyle Roman Ionic portico with a heavily moulded entablature covers double panelled doors, which are flanked by two bordered sash windows. The portico is also flanked by two glazing bar sash windows in moulded eared surrounds, and above are five similar windows. Inside, the hall boasts fine contemporary marble fireplaces, restrained plastered friezes and ceilings, and a remarkable cantilevered staircase with an openwork wrought iron balustrade in the Greek style. The arcaded stairwell is illuminated by a glazed rectangular lantern above, featuring a delicately plastered ceiling.
