Description

This is a pair of houses, Nos. 66 and 67 St Martin's, dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. They are built of ashlar with a stone slate roof and extend to two storeys and attics. The front elevation features a good moulded cornice and parapet, along with four hipped dormers. Rusticated pilasters run through both storeys at the ends and the centre, and a stone band divides the floors. There are eight windows in total; the upper storey windows have moulded, shouldered architraves with triple keystones and double-hung sash windows with original thick glazing bars. The ground floor windows have rusticated arches with keystones, but lack glazing bars. Panelled doors are set under rectangular fanlights within rusticated architraves that have pediments, although the fanlight to No. 67 is blocked. A stone plinth with a moulded capping runs along the base. No. 66 has two stone steps leading to the entrance, while No. 67 has curved steps and small wrought iron railings. These houses form a group with Nos. 39-43, the garden wall to No. 43, No. 44, the wall to No. 44, Nos. 45-70, the garden wall to Nos. 68 and 69, and the Burghley Almshouses.
