Description

Cardyke Farmhouse is a house that dates from the late 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the late 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring large ashlar quoins and dressings, and has roofs made of Collyweston slate, pantiles, and concrete tiles. The building has a very large external wall stack with a tall ashlar shaft and cornice, as well as a single red brick gable shaft.

The original 16th-century hall block, which includes a screens passage, has been extended in both directions. This single-storey plus attic hall block consists of two bays and features a four-centred chamfered arched doorway, now glazed, leading to the screens passage. There is a similar door at the rear. The roof includes a gabled dormer with a two-light casement and rendered cheeks.

To the right, there is a late 18th-century projecting parlour block that is two storeys high and has a single bay with a concrete tiled roof. This block is rendered and has single glazing bar sashes with cambered heads on each floor. To the left, an early 19th-century kitchen block is two storeys high, made of painted brick, and has a pantile roof, although it now features 20th-century windows.

Inside the 16th-century block, there is a large stone fireplace with a four-centred pointed chamfered surround that has double-roll stops. The ground floor girders are chamfered with triangular stops, and there is a built-in corner cupboard from the 18th century. The roof features an oak pegged clasped purlin design with all commons and no ridge piece. Additionally, the top of a wattle and daub partition along the line of a spere truss is still visible in the roof.
