Description

The Stamford Hotel, located at 16 St Mary's Street, Stamford, was built in 1820. The architect was J L Bond. It is a three-storey building constructed of ashlar. The ground floor is channelled and rusticated, featuring a coach arch at the north end. A massive ornamental frieze and parapet run along the top, with moulded decoration at each end and a central sculpture of the figure of Justice by J Rossi, RA. The facade has nine windows. The upper storey incorporates two projecting end blocks, each with one window; the central section contains seven windows between six Greek Corinthian columns resting on a moulded stone base and an iron balustrade. The central door consists of six panels within a slightly shouldered surround, featuring a moulded frieze of anthemions, a lion mask, and a flat hood supported by carved brackets. The coach arch on the right has been filled in with a window. The interior contains a good staircase of simple design appropriate to the period, although no other particularly significant features.
