Description
Brazenose College Gate, located on the south side of St Paul's Street, dates back to 1671. It features retaining walls that are part of the college. The gate is situated at the corner of Brazenose Lane, near the site of St Paul's Gate, which was demolished in 1780. Remnants of the old wall include a finely moulded early 14th-century gateway with nine orders, topped with a small gabled parapet and two defaced head stops. The jambs are shafted and adorned with stiff-leaf capitals. The wall is constructed with hand-made bricks on the rear side. A knocker, which is a replica of the original, was presented in memory of the secession of 1335-6, when this served as the gateway to the college. Brazenose College Gate and its retaining walls, along with two barns to the east of No 28, Brazenose School House, and Nos 30 to 33, form a cohesive group.
