Description
Chapel Cottage, originally a Chapel of Ease, is a small cottage built from the nave in the 12th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and has a pantile roof featuring a single brick ridge stack. It is a single-storey structure with a garret and has a three-bay front. On the left side, there is a 20th-century timber flat-roofed addition that covers a half-glazed door. To the right, there are a pair of two-light casements with timber lintels, and the roof includes two small roof lights. A lower extension is located on the left side, while the right gable features a blocked 12th-century arch with plain imposts, which is the chancel arch of the original chapel.
Inside, the chancel arch is exposed at first-floor level, showcasing a double order of chevron moulding and a chamfered hood mould above. The imposts are decorated with incised cross carvings. This chapel is noted to be where Isaac Newton worshipped.
