Description

Newton House is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early and late 18th century. It is constructed from squared coursed limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has stone coped gables. The building has parallel ranges, with the rear range being the earlier part.

The front elevation is three storeys high and has five bays, characterized by a moulded dentillated cornice and a plain parapet that includes panels with low relief carvings of flowers and fruit. The central entrance features an eight flush panel door with roundels, framed by an early 18th-century moulded stone architrave topped with a broken segmental pediment. This is flanked by pairs of glazing bar sash windows. The first floor has five similar windows, while the second floor has five smaller versions. All windows are adorned with moulded architraves and raised keyblocks featuring flower motifs. The upper floor windows also have scrolled sill brackets. On the left side, evidence of the 18th-century refronting and later raising can be observed.

The rear range includes a 17th-century ground floor window with a moulded surround and cornice, and on the first floor, there are two glazing bar sashes with stone architraves. Inside, the rear wing features chamfered and stopped beams. The late 18th-century dogleg staircase has turned balusters and a moulded handrail. Two first-floor rooms are finished with full-length height 18th-century panelling and bolection moulded fireplace surrounds.
