Description
The Burghley Arms, formerly known as the Bull Hotel, is located on the east side of Market Place. It is notable as the birthplace of William Cecil, Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, born on 13 September 1520. The building has undergone modernisation and roughcasting but now features 'Tudor' elements, including a coach arch and mullion windows. On the ground floor, modern 'Tudor' six-light mullion windows in stone have been added, and the coach arch is designed with a four-centred 'Tudor' arch. Above these windows and the arch is a stone moulding, with an empty central plaque. The first-floor mullion windows may be original and are also set under a stone moulding. The building has a tiled roof with three gabled dormers, a carved wood cornice, and stone plinths. To the left, there is a matching 'Tudor' extension that is now part of Lloyds Bank, which is rendered and features rusticated quoins.
