Description
Nos 8 and 10 North Street comprise two sections originally built as one. The right-hand section, associated with Lloyd’s Bank, is of one build with the Burghley Arms, and dates to the 19th century. This portion is ashlar faced, with a stone cornice and a single dormer window. It features rusticated quoins and a six-light window on each of the two floors. The left-hand section, which connects with the Post Office, was refronted in the early 20th century to match the style of Lloyd’s Bank; it is also ashlar faced and has a stone slate roof. This section features a ten-light window on each floor, and a bowed section to the right, topped with a balustraded parapet above the windows. The left-hand section of this building incorporates a moulded gable with a two-light mullion window, and the first floor has two four-light windows. A moulded string runs between the storeys. The Post Office portion of the building is three storeys high and has two gabled dormers, a moulded cornice, and a string above three windows of four lights, all demonstrating 19th-century features. The ground floor features three modern windows and a modern door. The buildings are listed as a visual group with the Burghley Arms.
