Description
The Abbey Churchyard West Wall and Gateway, located on the east side of Crowland Abbey Walk, dates from around 1870. It features a gateway leading into the churchyard, with an attached wall that extends approximately 33 meters to the south. The structure is made of limestone ashlar and includes a pair of gatepiers with rectangular plinths. The piers are adorned with single inscribed shields and topped with a broad chamfered cornice, which has small foliate motifs and a dentillated band. The gateway is complemented by ornate wrought iron gates. To the left of the north pier is a smaller pier with a plain plinth, a chamfered broached pier, and four upper gablets topped with a finial. There are two similar piers placed regularly along the low wall that runs southwards, which is topped by wrought iron railings.
