Description
The chancel to Church St. James is a 15th-century structure that underwent significant restoration in 1879 and 1894, with a 20th-century extension added to the west. It is constructed from ashlar, red brick, and dressed coursed rubble, topped with plain tile roofs featuring coped gables and a decorative ridge cross at the east end. The chancel has a 19th-century apsidal east end and a north aisle, while the west wall shows evidence of the former nave roof line.
On the west wall of the aisle, there is a single 19th-century pointed arched window with cusped tracery. The north wall features three 19th-century pointed arched two-light windows, also with cusped tracery. The east wall mirrors the west wall with a similar window arrangement. The east chancel, set on a moulded plinth extending to the south chancel, has three 19th-century pointed arched two-light windows with cusped tracery, hood moulds, label stops, and sill bands. The central window has animal head label stops. The south chancel contains three 19th-century pointed arched three-light windows with similar detailing, with the central window truncated and a blocked 15th-century doorway beneath it.
Inside, there are three bays of 19th-century nave arcades supported by quatrefoil columns and responds with moulded arches. The chancel arch is double chamfered and dates from the 15th century, featuring an inner order of octagonal responds and moulded capitals, with a single quatrefoil to the right. An octagonal font with a 15th-century bowl showcases cusped panels, and some 18th-century fragments are incorporated into the pulpit. The nave was destroyed during the Commonwealth period.
