Description

Serpentine House is a house dating from 1831, with additions made around 1860. It is built of red brick with some ashlar detailing, and has hipped slate roofs punctuated by four lateral brick stacks. The main east front has four bays; the two right-hand bays are lower and set back slightly and date from 1831. The basement windows consist of three glazing bar sashes to the left and a single three-light glazing bar casement to the right. Four glazing bar sashes are present on both upper floors, with the windows in the two right-hand bays being smaller. All windows have flush wedge stone lintels. A plaque between the two top-floor right-hand bays is inscribed 'AH 1831'. Extensions were added around 1860 to the south. The north return wall features a curved flight of ashlar steps with a rusticated front wall, curved stone balusters, square piers, and ball finials on the inner wall. These steps lead to an open, Doric porch with entablature and cornice, containing an inner reveal and a panelled door on its interior. A partially glazed door is located to the left, with a flush wedge ashlar lintel and raised keystone; a small glazing bar casement is to the right. A bay to the right projects slightly and features a semi-circular headed arch. A glazing bar sash is positioned above the porch, with a semi-circular headed glazing bar sash above it, both featuring margin lights. Attached to the right is a red brick garden wall, broken by a semi-circular headed archway containing a wooden and cast iron painted hand pump.
