Description
Sneath's Mill is a tower windmill built in 1779, constructed of red brick and featuring dogtooth eaves. The mill is octagonal and stands four storeys tall. On the south side, there is a doorway with an ashlar plaque above it inscribed with 'T.D. Ayliff 1779'. The first floor has a single window opening, while the east and west sides have window openings on the first, second, and third floors. The north side has blocked doorways at the ground and first floors, along with a single blocked window opening above.
Inside, the mill features an oak wind shaft with an iron poll end and a clasp arm brake wheel. It also contains a clasp arm wallower, which is crudely cogged and serves as a trundle or face gear-wheel. There is a wooden upright shaft with a clasp arm great spur wheel, and the drive to the flour dresser is largely intact, mostly made of wood and driven by a pinion from the great spur wheel. The datestone may indicate that in 1779, a wooden smock mill was moved to this site and encased in brick. Notably, the plan of the mill and the poll end and trundle gears are unique to Lincolnshire, as they are the last surviving examples in the region.
