Description
The north wing of Cowleys School, built in 1861, is a school hall and classroom located on Donington School Lane. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof with raised stone coped gables, finials, and kneelers, along with one ashlar stack. The building is designed in an L-plan and is a single storey with a six-bay front, where the right-hand bay is advanced and gabled. It has a plinth and stone bracketed chamfered eaves, as well as buttresses with raked tops.
On the right side, there is a Tudor arched door with moulded ashlar reveals, above which is a stepped ashlar panel that contains foliage, an inscription, and the date 1861. Above this door is a three-light mullioned and transomed window. To the left, there are four two-light windows and one single three-light window, all with chamfered ashlar surrounds. The gables feature two small square lights with diamond-set quatrefoils. Inside the hall, there is a fine hammer beam roof supported by moulded ashlar corbels. This wing was built as an addition to T. Cowley's original foundation established in 1719.
