Description

This is an 18th-century building on the north side of Eastgate. Originally a public house (the Waggon and Horses) and incorporating No. 15, it is constructed of brick with a pantile roof and two brick stacks. The front facade has three bays and three storeys, featuring segmental-arched windows, with the centre arches on the upper floors now blocked. Rendered bands delineate the floors. The ground floor now has two modern windows, and a rendered plinth continues up over the doorway plinth blocks. The doorway is framed by a wood doorcase with pilasters and a cornice. A stable range remains at the rear of the building.

To the right of the main building, a two-storey section has a pantile roof with one brick stack and two windows, one in a partly-blocked original opening with a wood lintel. A segmental-arched window is on the ground floor. This section also has a rendered plinth and a round-arched passage entry on the left side. An inserted datestone marking 1656 is situated to the side, and behind the building are the remains of a stone cottage with a steep roof. The premises has historic connections with Nos. 1-13 (odd) and No. 15, forming a notable group.
