Description
Aubourn Hall is a country house built in the 16th century and later altered and expanded for Sir John Meres between 1587 and 1628, likely designed by John Smythson. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a hipped tile roof with tall brick stacks. It has an L-shaped plan and is three stories high, with flush ashlar quoins and moulded bands. The south front has five bays and an off-centre doorway raised on five steps, which is framed by an ashlar surround with Doric pilasters supporting an entablature and a small pediment. The windows are transom and mullioned, mostly two-light, all fitted with iron casements. Some blue brick patterning can still be seen in the brickwork. Inside, the hall features 17th-century oak panelling and fireplace overmantels, as well as a fine close string newel staircase.
