Description

The Parish Church of St Andrew is a parish church that dates from the 10th century, with elements from the 12th and 17th centuries. It underwent repairs in 1826, the chancel was renewed in 1863, and the walls were restored in 1882. The church is built from coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, and it has slate roofs. It features a nave with a bellcote and a chancel. The west gable has a single gabled bellcote with a pointed arch and a chamfered hood. The north wall of the nave contains a single three-light chamfered mullioned window with segmental heads and a chamfered surround with a hood mould. The east window of the chancel, which is from the 19th century, has Y-tracery and is set in a pointed and double hollow chamfered surround. The south wall of the nave has a window that matches the one on the north side and a planked doorway with a segmental lintel and keyblock.

Inside, there is a plain segmental chancel arch, with a stone to the right that bears 10th-century interlace carving and a 12th-century roll-moulded fragment to the left. The church features a good set of early 19th-century plain softwood box pews, attractive late 17th-century altar rails with barley sugar balusters and a moulded rail. There is a panelled softwood pulpit and reading desk adorned with applied diaper bolection mouldings. On the north wall of the nave, there are two early 19th-century painted commandment boards, and above the chancel arch, there is a painted Royal Arms of George IV dated 1825. The font is a plain tapering circular tub with an oversized early 19th-century scumbled softwood octagonal lid.
