Description
The Navenby War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, designed by Messrs George Maile and Sons Ltd of London, with a later addition for the Second World War. It is made of Cornish granite and features leaded lettering. The memorial has a square plan and is located at the south-east end of the Church of St Peter.
The structure takes the form of a tall, rough-hewn Celtic cross, which has a carved crusader sword on its east face. The cross is positioned on a rough-hewn pyramidal plinth and is supported by a two-step base.
There are three inscriptions in leaded lettering set into polished sections of the stonework. These inscriptions are located on the east and south faces of the memorial. The east face, at the bottom of the cross shaft, reads: "TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND." The base of the east face states: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THESE MEN OF NAVENBY/ WHO DIED FOR YOU IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919," listing 22 names in two columns. The south face of the base commemorates the Second World War with the inscription: "1939-1945," which includes eight names in two columns.
