Description
Heckington Mill is a tower mill built in 1830 and repaired in 1890, designed by Michael Ingeldew. It features a tapering red brick tower that has been painted with bitumen, a dogtooth eaves course, and an ogee wooden cap topped with a ball finial. The mill stands five storeys tall. The ground floor has planked double doors, which are sheltered by a corrugated iron roof and accessed by six shallow steps. Above the doors, there is a datestone inscribed with "MH" for Michael Hare, the builder, along with the date 1830. Each floor above the ground level has single two-light sliding plain sashes, all with segmental brick heads. Between the first and second floors, there is a planked platform supported by cast iron brackets and equipped with a handrail.
The mill retains its eight sails, which were brought in 1892 by Mr. Pocklington, the mill's owner at the time, after the original sails were damaged in a storm in March 1890. The interior includes a brakewheel, wallower, and the rest of the driving gear. The third and fourth floors serve as bin floors, while the second floor houses the original three pairs of stones, with additional single pairs located on the first and ground floors. The substantial power generated by the eight sails allows the mill to operate five pairs of stones, as well as ancillary machines such as a corn dresser, sack hoist, feed mixer, and an adjacent woodworking shop. Heckington Mill is notable for being the only eight-sailed windmill still in existence in England.
