Description
Number 3 and the adjoining area wall is a house and boundary wall located in Minster Yard, Lincoln, dating from around 1715. It was designed by John White and incorporates elements from a 17th-century house and the medieval Priory gatehouse, with some alterations made in the early 19th century. The structure is built from coursed and squared rubble and brick, featuring an early 19th-century stucco front, with roofs made of plain tiles and pantiles. Notable architectural features include quoins, moulded eaves, two rear wall stacks, and a single ridge stack.
The exterior consists of two storeys plus a basement and attics, arranged in five bays. The front has steps leading to a central doorcase supported by columns, with a hood on brackets, a panelled door, and a fanlight. Flanking the door are two glazing bar sash windows with cornices, and above them are five similar sashes. There are also three segment-headed dormers with sashes. The basement features two casement windows on the left and a plank door on the right. The north gable, which was patched in 1815 after the demolition of the adjoining gatehouse, has a brick peak dating from around 1715. The adjoining boundary wall to the east is approximately 3 meters high and 15 meters long, topped with pantile coping and incorporating a reset 13th-century window. The area wall is stucco with stone coping and has five panelled piers.
Inside, the house features an open well staircase at the rear that rises to the full height, with square newels, a ramped handrail, and three vase and stem balusters per tread. The ground floor includes a central entrance hall with a panelled dado. To the left, there is a panelled room with a moulded cornice and a fireplace surround. The main rooms on the ground and first floors have moulded cornices, fielded six-panel doors, and mid-19th-century fireplaces.
Outside, at the front, there is an attached dwarf boundary wall made of stucco with stone coping, featuring five panelled piers. Additionally, there is an attached boundary wall on the north side, constructed from coursed squared stone, approximately 2 meters high and 15 meters long.
