Description

The Cathedral School Boarding House, originally known as Greystones, dates to the 13th century, with significant alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries and restoration around 1980. It was formerly part of a larger complex, including numbers 12 and 13 Eastgate. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and brick, with plain tile roofs and two gable and two ridge stacks. It is two storeys high plus attics, arranged in an L-plan.

The west front, facing James Street, features a panelled door in a moulded surround with a hood on brackets. To the right of the door are two three-light casements with wooden lintels. Above are a sliding sash window and four early 20th century casements. Further to the right is a restored timber-framed gatehouse with rendered nogging, containing a plain opening and a three-light casement above.

The rear wing, six bays wide, has a chamfered arched doorway off-centre to its south side. Above this doorway is a 13th-century pointed arch, now converted into a window. To the left of the arched doorway is an 18th-century door and beyond a 17th-century window with wooden mullions, followed by a cross casement. Above them are similar windows. Two bays to the right have late 20th-century replacement windows.

Inside the rear wing is a 13th-century roof with a strutted crown post, spine beam and collars. A medieval fireplace hood on brackets, with a joggled lintel, is located on the north wall. To the left of the fireplace is a single, blocked lancet window. Group Value: This building is recognised for its contribution to the architectural and historical character of the area.
