Description

Graveley Place and the adjoining garden wall are a house and wall located in Lincoln, dating from the early 14th century, late 17th century, and late 19th century. The structure is built from coursed and squared rubble and brick, featuring stone dressings and a plain tile roof. It has an external front wall stone stack with two square brick flues set diagonally, as well as a cruciform brick ridge stack. The building includes a plinth and quoins.

The house is two storeys plus attics and has an L-plan with three bays. The 19th-century windows are notable, with a slightly off-centre moulded wood doorcase that has a cornice and a part-glazed six-panel door, situated in a former carriage entrance that features a wooden lintel and two 14th-century mask corbels. To the left of the entrance is a blocked 14th-century doorway, and beyond that, there are stone mullioned windows with three lights on either side. Above these, there are two cusped stone mullioned windows with three lights and a similar two-light window to the right. The upper level features two gabled dormers with two-light casements.

Inside, there is a dogleg stair with square newels and stick balusters, along with a winder stair on the second floor. The roof comprises double purlin principal rafters with wind braces.

At the rear, there is a north garden wall dating from around 1300, which was formerly part of the north range. This wall is made of coursed squared stone with pantile coping, standing approximately 2 meters high and 15 meters long.

The building is named after John Graveley, who resided there from 1466 to 1473.
