Description
No. 2 Greestone Place is a house, now partly converted to flats, built between 1764 and 1778, with a rear wing added around 1862. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a plain tile roof featuring two gable stacks. It has two string courses, rusticated quoins, and a coped parapet and gables. The house is three storeys high, plus a basement, and has five bays in an L-plan layout.
The south front features a projecting central bay topped with a modillion pediment. Curved stone steps with iron balustrades lead up to a doorcase designed as a Venetian window, complete with voussoirs and a half-glazed door. On either side of this entrance are two 12-pane sash windows. Above, there is a central Venetian window with reticulated iron glazing bars and a bracketed sill, flanked by two more 12-pane sashes. Above this, a lunette with a keystone is positioned between two 6-pane sashes, with the left one altered to a casement. The basement windows are segment-headed casements, with the outer pair featuring keystones. The right side of the building, facing east, has a doorway with sidelights dating from around 1860.
Inside, there is a central two-storey hall with a moulded cornice on each floor. The original open well cantilever staircase has a cut string and three turned balusters per tread, topped with a ramped hardwood handrail. The doorcases are moulded, with fielded six-panel doors and shutters on the front door. The main rooms on each floor include moulded cornices and 19th-century fireplaces.
