Description
The former tithe barn to Vicar's Court is a building dating from around 1440, originally used as a lodging and storehouse, and now serving as garages and stores. The west end of the barn was demolished in the mid-19th century, and it underwent alterations in the mid-20th century. The structure is made of squared dressed stone, coursed rubble, and brick, topped with a hipped and gabled plain tile roof and featuring a brick side wall stack.
The barn has a chamfered plinth and stands two storeys high with five bays. The east gable showcases a restored three-light mullioned window, above which is a panel displaying the arms of Bishop Alnwick and John Breton, Prebendary of Sutton, both adorned with hoodmoulds. The south side is supported by six buttresses and features two doorways with elliptical arches and hoodmoulds; the right doorway contains a 19th-century window. Between the doorways, there is a single lancet and a 19th-century three-light mullioned window. To the left, a 20th-century casement and a garage door are present, while to the right, there is a single lancet and a 20th-century door in an altered opening. Above these, to the left, is a two-light window and a single lancet, both with hoodmoulds, along with a near-central small stair light. The north side has five small loop windows.
Inside, the barn features a 15th-century double purlin principal rafter roof.
