Description

Vicars Court, now divided into two houses, is the west lodging range of the college of Vicars Choral, dating from the early 14th century, with alterations made in the late 14th and 15th centuries, and restoration in the 17th century. It was further altered in 1875 by the Reverend GT Harvey for his own use. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and brick, featuring stone dressings and roofs that are hipped and gabled with plain tiles. It has a single gable and ridge stacks, along with two side wall stacks, and a first-floor band at the north end.

The exterior consists of two storeys plus attics and has seven bays in an L-plan layout. Most windows are casements with mullions and transoms. The east front features an off-centre square bay window that rises two storeys, with a four-light window on each floor and a crest in the gable. To the left, there is a single casement window, followed by a three-light window. To the right, there are two Tudor arched doorways with hoodmoulds, flanked by two single windows and a three-light window. Further to the right is a similar doorway leading to an entry. Above these are single and two-light windows, and to the right, two two-light pointed arched windows from the 19th century. A gabled dormer is situated above.

The attached wall to the left, which is the remains of the west range, features a string course, three corbels, and an incomplete stone coping. It contains the remnants of two blocked 14th-century windows and a 19th-century close boarded door. Above, there is a single lancet window to the left and the remains of three other openings.

Inside, there is a lancet opening with a carved drain in its sill.
