Description

Bromhead Hospital is a hospital building constructed in 1887, with later additions made in the 19th century and further extensions in 1927 by the architectural firm Scorer & Gamble, all designed in a matching style. The building is made of brick, featuring stone and terracotta dressings, and has a hipped plain tile roof with four ridge stacks and two side wall stacks. It is designed in the Renaissance Revival style, characterized by cogged eaves, a dentilled sill band, pedimented gables, and terracotta embellishments.

The structure consists of two storeys plus attics and spans 16 bays. The windows are glazing bar sashes. The original front has five bays, with a recessed centre of three bays that features a shaped Dutch gable, flanked by single wings. This section includes three small sashes, a coped square bay window on the left, and a pedimented doorcase on the right. Above this, there is a central sash with a segmental pediment, flanked by paired sashes with cornices. Above again, there are two flat-roofed dormers.

Each wing of the building has a canted bay window with a wavy coped parapet and three sashes, with a larger sash above each bay window, inscribed with "Built 1887" in the tympanum. A simpler addition to the left has five bays and an off-centre gable, featuring similar window arrangements to the wings.

The entrance front facing Church Lane has three bays, with a projecting pedimented centre that includes a pedimented doorcase flanked by single sashes. Above this, there are paired sashes flanked by single sashes. To the right is a 20th-century addition with six bays, designed in a very plain version of the same style. The interior has not been inspected.
