Description

Townley Bakers and the 'New to You' Antique Shop are two shops with accommodation above, dating from 1697, with elements from the mid 18th century, early 19th century, mid 19th century, and 20th century. The building features a colourwashed and rendered red brick front, with red brick return walls. It has a slate roof with wooden bracketed eaves, a single ridge, and two gable stacks, although the coped gables are no longer present. The structure is two storeys tall with an attic and has a four-bay front that includes first and second floor bands on the return walls.

No. 14, located on the left, has an 18th-century shop front with a bowed window flanked by pilasters and small glazing bars. There is a doorway to the left featuring a pilastered doorcase, an overlight, and a partially glazed door, topped with a continuous moulded, bracketed entablature. No. 12, on the right, has an early 19th-century shop front with five bays, a central deep-set doorway with an overlight and double partially glazed doors, and outer semi-circular headed openings. The doorway is flanked by single rectangular bay windows, each with outer pilasters and two lights with semi-circular heads. Above the doorway is a small stone that has been re-set, inscribed with "John L 1697".

On the upper floors, there are four plain sash windows, all with mid 19th-century moulded architraves. The roof features three flat-headed dormers with sliding sashes. The north return wall has a small late 17th-century blind opening with a semi-circular head to the right and a narrow 20th-century fixed window with a wooden lintel to the left. Above, there are two small blind openings from the 17th century with segmental heads and two additional small rectangular blind openings at garret level.
