Description
19 Market Place is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys tall with an attic. Its front is made of pilastered stucco and features a cornice just below the attic, which is topped by a parapet. The building has a 1-3-1 arrangement of window openings, with the outer windows being narrow and blocked on all floors. The central section of the building projects forward, and the frieze above the four pilasters is adorned with wreath ornaments. On the first floor, three central windows are topped with pediments on brackets, although the centre window is now blocked. The ground floor has been modernized for shops. This building is historically significant as it was where the first verses of Alfred (Lord) and Charles Tennyson were published. It is part of a group with Nos 17 to 25 Market Place.
