Description
The Transmitter Block at the former RAF Stenigot, built in 1938, is part of a "Type A" radar station. It features brick construction with a flat reinforced concrete roof, enclosed by a 5ft 6in (1.7m) wall made of flint shingle to disperse blast. The building has a rectangular plan and includes iron grilles for ventilation, with timber windows on the side walls. It is surrounded by concrete blast walls that are banked with earth. The interior retains evidence of the original gas filtration plant. Stenigot was one of 20 sites selected as "Advanced" stations by September 1937. The transmitter and receiver blocks, along with the towers—most notably the transmitter tower, which is the most complete surviving example of any Chain Home station—were finished by 1939. The transmission and reception of radio waves were crucial for radar, and these operations were housed in buildings protected by blast walls for defense against air attacks. "Type A" sites were designed based on layouts established at Bawdsey Experimental Station.
