Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church built in 1892. It is constructed of red brick with limestone ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with stone coped gables, which have cross finials. The church has dentillated eaves and a gabled west bellcote that contains a pointed opening for the bell and a cross finial. The structure includes a west porch, a nave, and a chancel that are combined into one, along with a north vestry. A plinth runs around the entire church.
The gabled west porch has a pointed doorway with an inner pointed doorway that has a continuously chamfered surround and a plank door. On the north side, there are two pairs of lancet windows, and beyond the vestry, there is a rectangular north window with two cusped ogee-headed lights and a pointed brick relieving arch above. The east end of the chancel features a pointed window with three pointed lights and intersecting tracery, while the south side has two pairs of lancets.
Inside, there is a plain vestry doorway with a panelled door. The church contains a 15th-century octagonal font decorated with quatrefoils that hold shields, set on a tall octagonal pedestal. The furnishings include 19th-century pews, lecterns, altar rails, and a reredos. Notable monuments include one to Sir John Guevara, who died in 1607, made of white, grey, and orange streaked alabaster with a black marble inscription plaque, featuring a kneeling figure in ruff, pantaloons, and armour, alongside a prieu dieu and flanking composite marble columns with an ornate apron and entablature topped with a large coat of arms. Another monument commemorates Francis Velles de Guevara, who died in 1592, made of white and orange streaked alabaster with a black marble inscription slab, depicting a kneeling figure before a prieu dieu, wearing a ruff, pantaloons, and cloak, with a segmental pediment above supported by decorated pilasters and a large coat of arms above.
