Description
The Chain Home Transmitter Tower, built in 1939 by Blaw Knox Ltd, is a significant radar transmitter tower that represents the first of three approved design variants (designated Group 1) created to the specifications of Air Ministry engineer Norman Garnish.
Constructed from bolted galvanised steel girders, the tower features steel ladders and platforms, with timber floor boarding on the platforms. It is supported by four concrete pads.
The tower has a rectangular plan and is located to the south of the transmitter block. It stands at a height of 360 feet (109.72 meters) and is designed as a self-supporting steel lattice structure with internal ladders and landing stages. Each corner of the tower has a foot resting on a concrete pad. There are two pairs of cantilevered platforms extending from the sides at heights of 50 feet (15.2 meters) and 200 feet (60.95 meters). A higher pair of platforms that was originally positioned at 350 feet (106.67 meters) has been removed.
